Starlink, the groundbreaking satellite internet company founded by Elon Musk, is making waves worldwide as it expands its Direct-to-Mobile service to five more countries. This came after SpaceX just shot 42 more satellites into orbit, like it’s stocking the ultimate cosmic vending machine. Out of these, 26 come with direct-to-cell powers, meaning your phone could soon get better service in space than it does in your basement.
Elon Musk’s Starlink company would be working with network carriers in each countries it operates to rollout the service. “We are starting off working with one carrier in each country, but ultimately hope to serve all carriers,” Musk said.
“Starlink’s new system enables Internet connectivity for your mobile phone with no extra equipment or special app. It just works.” Stated by Elon Musk.
Sticking to the plan, the Starlink team hit a major milestone on Monday, January 8, 2024, by successfully sending and receiving their first text messages. Using T-Mobile’s network spectrum, they pulled this off through one of their freshly launched Direct-to-Cell satellites that had only been cruising in orbit for six days. Talk about fast service!
Starlink promises that when their service rolls out, you won’t need to swap your phone for some futuristic space gadget. Nope, your good old 4G phone is ready to party with satellites—finally giving that “rocket in your pocket” phrase a whole new meaning.
