Google announced today that, High-Risk users can now enroll in the Advanced Protection Program (APP) with
Passkeys. The cybersecurity program is intended for users who could be at high risks cyber-attacks, bullying and scams.To overcome cyber-attacks, google advised that high risk users are now able to enroll on the program by enabling passkeys in the APP. Users need not to use the traditional physical keys to secure their account data.
In addition to the passkey, Google announce that they are partnering with Internews to provide security support to journalists and human rights workers. The program will cover 10 countries including in Asia, Latin America and Europe.
Google is one of the first giant firms to start offering passkeys for security protection in 2022 for its major workspace and Android devices. Since the implementation, Google said Google said that more than 400 million accounts have used passkeys more than 1 billion times.
Ease of Passkeys with APP
Users who would wish to protect their account doesn’t need to carry physical security keys that could be costly. Passkeys give high risk users the option to rely on the ease and security that come with using supported personal devices they already have
How do I enroll in APP using a passkey?
Before enrolling on security passkeys with APP, High risk users will need to have a compatible device and browser and follow the steps below.
- Visit the Advanced Protection Program enrollment page
- Click on “Get started”
- Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the enrollment process. You can choose to enroll with a passkey or with a physical security key
Once the above steps are done, Google requires users to add a recovery option like a phone number and email, or another passkey or security key.
