Microsoft is shaking up its desktop lineup once again. If you’ve grown accustomed to the handy Calendar, People, and Files companion apps pinned to your Windows 11 taskbar, it’s time to start saying your goodbyes. Microsoft has officially announced that it will permanently retire these three companion applications on December 16, 2026.
After this cutoff date, the apps will completely cease to function and will no longer receive security updates or technical support.
What Were These Companion Apps?
Introduced roughly a year ago, these lightweight utilities were designed to streamline daily workflows. By integrating Microsoft Copilot directly into the Windows 11 taskbar, they allowed users to quickly look up colleagues, pull up local or cloud files, and check upcoming meetings without needing to open full browser windows or heavier software.
Set to launch automatically upon login, the goal was simple: reduce context switching and keep productivity flowing.
Why the Shift?
While Microsoft initially rolled out these apps automatically on Windows 11 enterprise devices, the strategy has clearly shifted. The tech giant has already halted the automatic deployment of these utilities through regular Microsoft 365 updates.
Rather than maintaining dedicated, standalone taskbar utilities for individual functions, Microsoft appears to be streamlining its ecosystem, steering users toward consolidated Copilot experiences and integrated Microsoft 365 hubs.
What IT Admins and Users Need to Do Next
For everyday users, the transition is straightforward—you’ll simply return to accessing your calendar, contacts, and documents through Outlook, Teams, and standard Microsoft 365 apps.
For IT administrators, however, there is a bit of cleanup required. Microsoft is strongly advising admins to proactively uninstall and remove these companion apps from all managed devices within their tenant ahead of the December deadline to avoid software clutter and broken shortcuts.
Decoupling secondary apps is never easy when habits are established, but the December 16, 2026 deadline gives organizations ample runway to adjust their daily routines before the apps go dark for good.
